There are two things that I love doing: staying up to date on the news and catching up with friends and family. Last night, I was talking to my cousin, John, who lives in Delaware. We spoke about our families, jobs and life in general. A little later into the conversation, we got talking about interesting things that have been happening in our hometowns.
I told John about our town's contentious election for mayor and about the school district's plan to build a swimming pool in the high school's gym, but nothing compared to what my cousin told me.
He was watching the news when a story came on about how an air conditioner thief has finally been arrested in Greenwood, which is close to where John and his family live. My cousin told me that apparently a man named Curtis Elliot had been stealing ACs from different businesses throughout Sussex County. John said that this guy has been on the run since April.
Police discovered what Elliot was doing after a surveillance camera caught him stealing the appliance from a local business. John said that Elliot is being held at the Delaware Correctional facility because he was unable to post bail.
After I got off the phone with John, I found myself asking how can people steal? I told my wife the story and she was equally surprised as I was. My conversation with my cousin highlighted the importance of securing valuables, either by purchasing or building a sturdy cage around it or by putting a small recording device near the appliance.
