Overhauling a baseboard heater system

Finding cost-effective solutions for home maintenance problems can be as simple as using electric heaters creatively.

Baseboard heater problems can be among the most extensive to repair. This was a notion that I touched on in my last post, but didn't delve into as it's a complicated subject matter. However, some readers were asking my opinion on whether a faulty baseboard heater could mean that it's the perfect time to change their house's heating system altogether. In short, I can't answer that question. This depends largely on how much money the homeowner is willing to put up in the short term, and how much they're looking to save in the long run, as both concerns should be weighed heavily.

What I can do, however, is inform these readers about the pros and cons of common household heating systems. For instance, many homeowners have electric resistance heating systems – commonly called electric baseboard heating. This was chosen by many homebuilders because it's less costly to install. But, the bad news for homeowners is that it's more expensive to keep running. Replacing the existing ducting is a big task, and since the end result will be a more costly method of home heating, homeowners may want to explore their other options.

When homeowners do choose a more extensive replacement, they should be sure to take precautions that can help them in the meantime. For example, by using different types of electric heaters in rooms throughout their home, occupants can continue to enjoy a consistent level of warmth during the replacement process.

To save money on this purchase, homeowners may want to conduct their shopping online. By opting to buy from the right retailer, these individuals could cut the overall costs of this project by picking up some items that can help them not only in the meantime, but also when they want to reduce their heating bills by mitigating the use of their baseboard heaters.
